The University of Worcester, Worcester Wolves are excited to confirm the Women’s Basketball Team play local rivals Bristol Flyers on Saturday 17th October 2020.

It marks the opening match of their debut season in the Women’s National Basketball League Division 1 (WNBL 1) after securing promotion by winning WNBL Division 2 in 2019/20. The team won the league title with a 9-2 record and both Lucy Buxton and Maia Bratka made NBL Division 2 team of the year. In addition, Maia Bratka was named MVP for the entire league, before COVID-19 put an end to the season prior to the play offs.

It has been a summer of change for the squad as several players graduated and relocated. The Wolves said farewell to Maia Bratka, Maria Diez, Lucy Buxton, Chloe Hinett, Katarina Gregarova and Rebecca Yamalimbu. However, returning and new squad players for the 2020/21 Division 1 campaign, will be announced over coming days.

Head Coach Ryan Emery will be returning for his sixth season in charge and is looking forward to challenges that await in Division 1.

Emery said “We have worked incredibly hard to be in a position where we are prepared and ready to start our season on the 17th October. All staff involved with the University of Worcester based Club have worked tirelessly to overcome every hurdle posed by the pandemic and get the team on court to represent the City of Worcester, this season.

The players entered pre-season at the beginning of September and have shown determination and a great attitude in these most challenging of times. I feel the team we have assembled is more than capable of competing at this level and can’t wait to get League play underway.”

Dr Susie Scriven, University of Worcester Wolves Director, leading the women’s programme, said “Our University City is justifiably proud of its sporting heritage. It is great to see young women choosing to study at Worcester so they may play elite level sport.

We’re now playing the highest standard of women’s basketball possible before a team has to turn professional, entering the WBBL. These young women have an exciting future ahead of them.”
