Worcester Wolves player and University of Worcester School and Exercise Science Student Nathan Ramsdale-Owen has taken up a new role during the Covid-19 Pandemic to help others: a Health Care Assistant with the NHS.

We’ve asked him few questions about his new role to see how he’s getting on.

How did you get into your role as a Health Care Assistant?

I got into the role because of my Mom, she works in the NHS and when COVID-19 began, there were a lot of jobs and she said why not apply to try and earn some money and try to help make a difference for some people.

Working with ex-offenders who self-harm must be very challenging but also rewarding, how has your experience been so far?

Yes, working with ex-offenders and mentally unstable individuals is very difficult and a few incidents have occurred when I’ve been working and it does get scary and intimidating at times. One main thing that the patients have trouble with is trust. In my time of being there I have been able to connect with a majority of the patients on a level that other staff haven’t, and when they start talking about their lives and confiding in me about how they feel, it makes the job so much easier. From there we know what that individual needs to work on to help their mental health, especially with the pandemic going on.

Can you see yourself working in the Health Care Sector in the future?

I don’t think I will be working there full time after university or anything like that but I definitely want to pick up a shift or two later down the line so that I can stay in the NHS system and continue to help people with mental health problems. It has been a non-stop year for you both on and off the court.

Tell us a little bit more about your degree with the School of Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Worcester?

It has been a tough year but it has been such a good year in the big picture. My first year has gone way better than I expected and I’ve enjoyed it so much. I am very excited to see how my second year goes and where having this degree will take me after university.

What are your plans for next season?

My plans for next season are to continue to play BUCS 1st and hopefully still be able to be a part of the Wolves team, that is such a big goal for me now, especially seeing how the fans and teammates bonded and the whole experience was the best!

A huge well done to Nathan for stepping up and making a difference in these difficult times, making his family, friends, the club and University proud.
