James Praise for Wolves Fans Ahead of First Home Fixture

Worcester Wolves’ supporters will again be a ‘huge factor’ as the team look to build on the success of last season, Head Coach Paul James says.

The Wolves began their campaign with an 86-81 victory over Newcastle Eagles last Friday, and return to the University of Worcester for their first home game of the season against Cheshire Phoenix this weekend, before travelling to face Manchester Giants on Sunday.

Wolves’ first season in their new home was an unqualified success, with large crowds and intimidating atmospheres spurring James’ side on to collect the first two major trophies in their history – the BBL Trophy (won in Glasgow) and the BBL Play-Off title, claimed at Wembley Arena.

Ahead of the Cheshire game, James believes that the fans will have just as big a part to play again this season.

“The supporters are a huge factor,” he explains. “Some of the games we won at home last season, we had no right to win, and I think that was down to us having that big crowd cheering us on; we just didn’t want to let them down.

“They’re like the sixth man on court – they can be intimidating for the opposition and it certainly gives us a boost, so it’ll be very important that we build on that atmosphere again this season, and make sure the wins keep coming.”

Wolves fans travelled in huge numbers to both finals last season, and the club’s Managing Director, Mick Donovan, believes that the supporters helped the club take the next step in its development.

“I thought we went up to a different level in terms of support last year,” he explains. “We managed to keep our loyal fans after the move from the St John’s Sports Centre, and they were joined by a larger group who had the same passion and commitment.

“The players constantly commented upon on how good the fans are, and from my point of view, seeing people get behind the team in those close games has demonstrated how important that support is when working for the win.

“If nobody cares what you’re doing, you’re less likely to be motivated, but when you have a loyal group of fans screaming support and depending on you, it’s a big motivating factor.”

Fans can purchase tickets for Friday’s game – which tips-off at 7.30pm – from the University Arena reception, or at https://www.ticketline.co.uk.
