Worcester Wolves failed to build on last weekend’s thrilling win over title-contenders St Helens Saints when losing out at mid-table Sheffield Sharks on Saturday.

A back-and-forth encounter wound down with Wolves holding the final possession of the match with just 20 seconds to play and needing a three-pointer to extend the contest.

A double of hurried shots both went astray, leaving Sheffield to celebrate a 75-72 success and leaving Wolves coach Dean Blake exasperated.

“We’re not doing the little things right,” explained Blake. “We missed shots at the end to tie the game but there’s stuff we didn’t sort out earlier on.

“We had leads but we lost them because we’re not willing to do basic things.”

Harry Godwin, starting in place of injured Worcester playmaker Wilfrid Santhe, was twice accurate from long-range in the first quarter.

With big men Humberto Ferreira and Earl Burgess both accumulating early inside scores, the visitors entered the second quarter 25-22 to the good.

Luan Ferreira joined the action to steal the ball and convert a bonus free throw as he finished a three-point play to move his side into a 29-22 lead.

But Sharks now took their turn to flourish. Youthful guard Declan Kom ignited matters with a triple and then saw his veteran teammate Sedale Hanson-Young twice do likewise.

Kom raced up-court to dunk the ball home and finalise a 15-2 rampage in a punishing three-minute spell that propelled the hosts 37-31 ahead at five minutes before half-time.

However, Sheffield’s 48-42 interval lead was quickly overturned when Wolves rattled in the first eight points of the second half.

The game of runs continued as Sharks went into the final quarter 63-56 in front after taking advantage of a prolonged spell of wayward shooting from their opponents.

Turnovers abounded from both sides before Godwin prompted another closing of the deficit as he sank a three and then danced to a reverse layup before being forced to the side-lines to recover from a fall.

By the last minute of the evening Worcester had hauled themselves back into a 72-72 tie but Kom grabbed a rebound and drained his third success from beyond the arc to set up victory.

Godwin led the visiting scoring with 20 points, supported by 15 and 14 points respectively from Humberto Ferreira and from Burgess.

Wolves’ final match before a festive break takes place this Saturday 20 December (7.30pm) back at the University of Worcester Arena against Sharks’ neighbours Sheffield Arrows.

“We will need to prepare as always and we have to come into the game with the right mentality,” added Blake.

Tickets are available now to purchase here and from the University of Worcester Arena Box Office.
