Worcester Wolves Women never stopped believing in their pursuit of victory, as they tipped off Super Saturday at the University of Worcester Arena with the narrowest of 69-70 defeats to visitors, Brent Bulls.

Wolves rolled into Saturday’s match off the back of a commanding 58-82 W away at Bromsgrove Bears, and looked eager to pick up where they left off as Captain, Charlotte Finn, ensured the scoreboard was working, sinking an early triple.

Worcester’s Catarina Seixas also struck nothing but net from outside the arc shortly after, however four maximums for the visitors contributed towards Bulls striding into a nine point lead, 14-25 ahead at the first quarter’s conclusion.

The second quarter proved frustrating for Wolves, as they struggled to connect with many efforts. This, combined with a relentless Bulls offense, saw the travelling side’s advantage stretch to 16 with just over five minutes left in the half.

However, Worcester’s character shone through as they dug in, embarking on some strong defence to keep the Bulls away from the paint. Frustrated at not being allowed to advance their lead, the visitors’ discipline began to falter, committing a series of offensive and technical fouls.

The half time buzzer sounded, much to the relief of the Bulls, who despite the scoreline showing 33-46 in their favour, certainly felt as if they were on the wrong end of a momentum swing.

Despite its frantic start, both sides were slow to add to their tallies moving into the third quarter. Scoring continued in tit-for-tat phases, ensuring Bulls remained in control.

That was until Worcester’s Cianni Montgomery decided to put her foot on the gas, however.

Fresh off a 34 point game last time out, Montgomery’s dazzling footwork and clean hands came to life to drop in two points. She hastily backed this up by sending a Brent defender one way and going the other to pop another off the glass.

Sexias’ second arcing triple of the night before the third quarter’s end saw the Bulls’s lead cut to just five points, leading 53-58 with one quarter remaining.

The match remained on a knife-edge, but with the help of an encaptivated University of Worcester Arena, those in blue battled back to create a one possession game with just over two minutes to go in the final quarter.

A clinical visit to the stripe from Finn and a fruitful drive downhill by Montgomery, ensured there was just one point splitting the sides heading into the concluding 30 seconds.

Continued resolute defence from the homeside forced a shot clock violation, handing Wolves possession with nine seconds to go. A slick interchange with Tejonah McKay, saw Montgomery drive for the game clinching bucket. However, she was greeted by the Bulls defence and as the final buzzer sounded her shot faded agonisingly off the ironwork.

Despite the loss, the group’s never say die attitude was clear to see once more and Cianni Montgomery proved why she was the recipient of last week’s WNBL Player of the Week, top-scoring with an impressive 33 point haul.

The result leaves Brent Bulls just two points behind Wolves, who remain in sixth place in the WNBL standings on eight points.

Wolves Women’s next fixture comes on the road, away at CoLA Southwark Pride on Saturday 13th December (2:30pm), they next return home to take on London Cavaliers back at the arena on Saturday 3rd January (3pm).
