The Worcester Wolves are excited to announce the appointment of the Franchises new Head Coach to lead the British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League team into the 2026 season.
Former Great Britain star Clare Griffiths, will take the helm of the WPL team as the Wolves look to build on previous seasons success and take the league by storm when the new campaign starts in January.
As a former Great Britain Paralympian, with a distinguished 18-year international playing career, Clare brings a rare combination of real-world elite experience and deep understanding of the sport.
During her playing days, Clare represented GB in five Paralympic Games and earned seven European Championship bronze medals.
She also played professionally abroad, making her one of the early British women to compete at that level, winning multiple championships domestically.
Outside of sport, her degree in Sport and Exercise Science and experience in management consultancy and leadership roles further complement her coaching potential. Her strategic vision, commitment to athlete development, and passion for growing the sport make her exceptionally well suited to lead our programme forward.
Having been a player for the Wolves for last 12 months, Clare is already an integral part of the team, having built relationships with players and understanding the culture and vision of the Worcester Wolves.
On her appointment, Clare said; “I’m delighted to be stepping into this new role. Having spent many years competing at the highest level, I’m passionate about using that experience to support, develop, and empower the next generation of female wheelchair basketball players. This is an exciting opportunity to help nurture talent, build confidence, and contribute to the growth of the sport I love.”
Worcester Wolves Managing Director April White ecstatic with appointment of Clare Griffiths; “Being able to bring in a coach with the experience and knowledge that Clare has is a real benefit to our programme, players and wider basketball community. It is also great to have a female Head Coach join our on-court leadership team and help develop our players on and off the floor. We are all very excited to see Clare lead the team in what promises to be an exciting season ahead.”
Kevin Currell, BWB Performance Director added; “We’re pleased to see Clare’s talents as a coach and retired Paralympian being passed on to the newer generation of women’ players at Worcester.
In due diligence, we’ll register her conflict of interest as is standard procedure with BWB’s policies around being on the board, which will ensure transparency and fairness when it comes to decisions being made around the performance partnerships we have with HPP’s”.
Clare will take charge of the team with immediate effect and has already begun work behind the scenes ahead of what promises to be an exciting season and she will take charge of her first game on January 17th when the Wolves open the season against the Mohawks at the University of Worcester Arena.
Stay tuned for further players announcements in the coming weeks.
