Worcester Wolves worked hard to overcome Tees Valley Mohawks 80-70 at the University of Worcester Arena on Saturday to notch their second win in this season’s National Basketball League.

A back-and-forth contest saw the sides tied at 48-48 in the third quarter before a burst of scoring, led by Worcester stalwarts Marcus Robinson and Daijaun Antonio, broke the match open.

“Ultimately we had the deeper bench and I was able to throw fresher guys onto the floor,” explained Wolves coach Dean Blake.

“We have to win these games against teams like Tees Valley if we want to be one of the better teams in this league.

“We got the win but I feel we’ve still got better performances in our locker.”

Antonio kicked the ball out for Robinson to set the home side of the scoreboard ticking with a three-pointer.

Both players connected twice more from distance while big men Theo Bailey and Rex Agbaso produced dunks to push Worcester 24-15 in front entering the second period.

A tighter game now developed with the teams deadlocked at 39-39 by half-time.

Antonio and Robinson both planted their feet to slot in rat-a-tat triples to sway the match in favour of the hosts.

Georgios Stergiopoulos similarly connected from afar, moving Wolves 59-51 clear at the close of the third quarter.

With confidence now surging, Robinson, Antonio and fellow guard Harry Godwin took turns to set up teammates’ scores, enabling an overwhelming 77-60 lead with two minutes remaining.

A belated burst of Tees Valley action gave respectability to their margin of defeat.

All-round displays from Robinson and Antonio saw them top-score with 26 and 23 points respectively. Antonio also grabbed nine rebounds and Robinson eight, with the pair providing a bagful of assists between them.

First-year recruit Robinson was pleased to contribute eight three-pointers to the win and also gave some background to his arrival in the city.

“Shooting threes has always been my go-to thing. The past few games it hasn’t been there for me, but today it came to me,” said Robinson.

“But it’s all about the team performance. Up to now we haven’t done what we need to do defensively, though today was a little better.

“Because we gave up too many late points today the score doesn’t show it, but we’re getting better as a group as time goes on.”

A former member of the prestigious Myerscough Basketball Academy, Robinson already knew several current teammates from his time there and his transition into Worcester has also been aided by his time already spent in the country, holding dual British/American nationality.

“I’ve played in the Great Britain Junior programme and have friends here who I played alongside at Myerscough.

“Worcester’s a really nice college town. The people are great and the teachers at the University are great. Everything has been good for me – I’m enjoying it here.”

Wolves travel to Manchester Magic next Saturday 31 October for a 5.30pm tip off before returning to the University of Worcester Arena on Saturday 07 November (7.30pm) to host Liverpool.

Tickets are on sale now for Super Saturday on November 7th and can be purchased online and from the Arena Box Office.
