Hornets create a buzz about community basketball participation in Hereford
Worcester, United Kingdom (March 28, 2014) – The Worcester Wolves Basketball Club in partnership with the University of Worcester supported by the Herefordshire & Worcestershire County Sport Partnership and BrightStripe – Cultural Health C.I.C, Hereford are excited to announce the official launch of the Hereford Hornets Basketball Club.
Trevor Smith, owner of the Hereford City Centre McDonalds, kindly supplied the start-up sponsorship funds to allow the club to first open its doors to the Herefordshire public on January 19th, 2014. Based at Whitecross Hereford High School & Specialist Sports College, in little over two months, thanks to the overwhelming support of the local community, over 90 basketball players of all ages and abilities have already taken to the court.
Having been inundated with entries to the name and design a logo competition, for the then unnamed ‘Hereford Community Basketball Club’, we are delighted to reveal that Jake Mitchell’s suggestion of ‘Hereford Hornets’ and accompanying logo (see the attached image) was selected as the winner.
To mark the official opening of the club we will be hosting an introductory presentation and logo unveiling, which will be held at University of Worcester Arena, 4th April 2014, 7.25PM, before the Worcester Wolves Basketball Club’s game against Durham Wildcats. The presentation will include the unveiling of a professionally produced logo based on Jake’s design.
Furthermore, we would like to invite all parents and interested community members to attend an open meeting with us at Whitecross Hereford High School, Sunday 6th April, 11am, to discuss the future direction of the Hereford Hornets and highlight the various committee roles and volunteering opportunities that will be available.
Additionally, due to the success of the junior programme and increasing demand, the Hornets are seeking to establish a senior men’s basketball team.
