Worcester Wolves Overcome Loughborough Lightning To Take Their First Win Of The Season In The Women’s Premier League

The Worcester Wolves notched their first win of the season in the British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League with a home court victory over 3 time champions Loughborough Lightning.

The 200 strong attendance were treated to a fast paced and competitive game which saw the Wolves come out firing on all cylinders as they took 16-8 lead to end the first quarter after Lucy Robinson won the jump ball for Wolves to start the game.

Lightning were the first to score with a 2 pointer drained by Anastasia Blease followed shortly after with a response from Wolves Jade Atkin which was the start of both teams exchanging basket for basket, until the Wolves went on a 6-0 scoring run to end the first period of regulation with Worcester’s Jade Loughlin sinking the final score of the quarter.

Lightnings scoring troubles continued when play re-commenced, while Worcester continued their clinical finish around the hoop with contributions from Kirsty Van Der Poll and Cat Yearron which helped Wolves run out to a 9 point lead to end the second quarter with the score board reading 28-19 in favour of the hosts.

GB duo Lucy Robinson and Jade Atkin combined for 8 third quarter points and 9 rebounds as Worcester continued to control the game going into the fourth and final quarter of play.

Wolves took a while to find their rhythm and baskets from Elana Brand and Jessica Whyte without reply put Lightning withing 6 points of their opponents, but with 6 minutes left of the game, Jade Atkin sunk a 2 pointer which saw Cat Yearron and Jade Loughlin follow up to see Wolves go on 6-0 run to re-establish their lead and see them run out 46-41 winners on the night.

Wolves Head Coach Clare Griffiths will be very pleased with her teams performance and victory with the team now 1-1 for the season.

Jade Atkin secured a double double of 14-14 and was 2 assists off making it a triple, Lucy Robinson also score 14 points along with 7 rebounds at Cat Yearron had a stand our performance with 8 points, 4 rebounds and an assist. Lightnings Elana Brand led all scorers with 21 points.

Worcester return the BWB WPL action with a road trip to Mohawks on Saturday February 14th, tip off 1pm.
