Worcester Wolves Appoint Warburton As New BWB Women’s Premier League Head Coach

The Worcester Wolves have moved quickly this summer to appoint a new Head Coach for their British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League Team with the announcement of Lucas Warburton who will spearhead the programme from August.

Warburton brings a wealth of coaching experience with him. He joins the Wolves from elite German outfit Rhine River Rhinos who compete in the Rollstuhlbasketball-Bundesliga (RBBL) where as Head Coach he steered them to a fourth-place finish in the league standings with a 11/7 win/loss record and a points difference of +137.

Warburton also has international pedigree as Coach for Team England 3X3 Wheelchair Basketball at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games where he helped lead the Men’s and Women’s Teams to a podium finish and Bronze Medals respectively.

The Wolves have finished in third place in the standings in the last two season of the British Wheelchair Basketball Women’s Premier League and Warburton will be looking to build on the great foundations that have been set.

He Said “I’m really excited to be joining the Worcester Wolves, the University of Worcester has played such a huge role in wheelchair basketball in this country, so to get an opportunity to work there it feels like a second home!

I’m really excited to work with this group of players and I feel like we have a lot of potential for a very exciting season.

Of course, it’s going to be a new challenge from my coaching roles previously, but I’m relishing this opportunity and can’t wait to get started”

The Worcester Wolves Board are very pleased to have secured the signature of Warburton, Managing Director Mick Donovan, is very excited by what the future holds for the team. Mick said “The Worcester Wolves are very excited at the prospect of welcoming Lucas to the program. He brings a wide range and high level of experience whilst still being in the early stages of his coaching journey. Lucas really demonstrated a player centred approach in our discussions, and I am sure that he will have a huge impact upon the future development of our teams and with individual players.”

Preparations will continue at hast as the club prepare for the 2023/24 BWB Women’s Premier League season.

The University of Worcester is one of four High-Performance Partnerships, which includes Cardiff Metropolitan University, Loughborough University and the University of East London, that are each – home to a Women’s Premier League Team.
