Worcester Wolves are riding high at the top of National Basketball League Division One after demolishing fellow title-contenders Myerscough Academy on Saturday.

Wolves raced out to a 22-12 first-quarter lead before Myerscough closed the deficit to within a single point early in the second half only to then have to watch their visitors thump their way to an overwhelming 85-63 victory.

Wilfrid Santhe set up Earl Burgess for the game’s opening score and repeated the feat a few minutes later, with Burgess now dunking the ball through the hoop.

Fin Rennie debuted on the scoresheet in the second quarter with a three-point play and Emmanuel Yeboah produced a solo drive at the half-time buzzer that sent Worcester into the locker rooms 34-28 ahead.

Play recommenced with a burst of action from Myerscough’s seven foot centre Zach Trezvant. After swinging on the basket he stepped outside for a three-pointer and then provided consecutive assists for teammates, leaving Wolves clinging to a 36-35 edge.

Daijaun Antonio and Harry Godwin both connected from distance and Burgess got down to heavy-lifting to restore a 55-46 cushion for their side as they entered the final quarter.

Trezvant once more made the most of his height to just about keep Myerscough in contention, trailing 68-58 with six minutes remaining, before Worcester set out on a devastating 17-5 run that left no doubt about who was the superior team.

Yeboah and Santhe rattled home a series of triples and, not content with only tormenting defenders close to the net, Burgess took delight in seeing one of his own very rare three-point attempts succeed a split-second before the shot-clock was about to expire.

With Myerscough’s morale now thoroughly deflated, Yeboah was allowed ample time to calmly plant his feet for another perimeter success and set the seal on the away win.

Burgess and Yeboah led the scoring with 29 and 20 points respectively.

Wolves take a fortnight break until their next outing, a trip to Teesside Lions on Saturday 31 January (6pm).

After that, a four-game road schedule will continue with visits to Liverpool and to Manchester Magic, with the team returning to the University of Worcester Arena on Saturday 21 February to host Oxford Hoops.
