Worcester Wolves have moved up to fourth place in National Basketball League Division One after coming out on the high side of a 74-72 thriller against Myerscough Academy on Friday.

Fans at the University of Worcester Arena were entertained by a see-saw contest where Wolves had to battle back from a 72-69 deficit entering the final couple of minutes and where they were only confirmed as the victors when stalwart forward Humberto Ferreira rose up to swat away a last-gasp Myerscough attack.

Coach Dean Blake was initially lost for words after the win, reflecting: “I don’t know what to say – Myerscough are a very good team but we made that match so hard for ourselves.

“If we’d played the first thirty-eight minutes with the same desire and effort that we played with in the last two minutes then it wouldn’t have even been a close game.

“We’ve won the game, so that’s great, but I believe we’re a better team than we’ve shown. There are things we’re working towards and standards we’re trying to achieve, but today wasn’t where we have to be.”

Rat-a-tat scoring from an effervescent Fin Rennie and patient moves to the basket from a powerful Earl Burgess pushed Worcester into a 22-17 first-quarter lead.

The hosts’ composure continued with Harry Godwin contributing a double of three-pointers and Emmanuel Yeboah notching his first points of the season just before the half-time break.

However, a 40-35 interval advantage was swiftly erased on the back of a fourth triple of the evening from dangerous Myerscough guard Harry Sheehan and a ring-swinging dunk from seven-foot centre Zach Tresvant.

By the third-quarter’s end the momentum was all in favour of the visitors as they high-fived to the side-lines with a 60-53 cushion.

Burgess spun to the hoop to dampen the Myerscough celebrations. Wilfrid Santhe twice intercepted passes to set up Yeboah and Georgios Stergiopoulos conversions and now draw the teams closer on the scoreboard.

Santhe drilled a shot from several feet behind the three-point arc to push Wolves 62-60 in front with eight minutes to play.

By four minutes remaining Sheehan’s seventh triple-success from just ten attempts had once more reversed the lead.

Daijaun Antonio made up for being dispossessed by his opponent by snatching the ball straight back and laying it home to bring up a 72-72 tie in the final  minute.

Missed shots abounded and players scrambled on the floor before Burgess eventually grabbed the winning basket, ahead of Ferreira’s rejection of Myerscough’s last attack.

Burgess led the way with 17 points and completed a familiar double-double display by pulling down 11 rebounds. Rennie and Santhe tabbed a dozen points apiece.

Wolves return to the University of Worcester Arena next Saturday 01 November, (7.30pm), hosting Teesside Lions.

“Teesside will want to get their first win of the year so we can’t take them for granted,” added Blake. “We’ve got our standards and we have to work towards maintaining them every week.”
