Worcester Wolves showed they have a quiver full of weapons as they made short work of Cardiff Archers in National Basketball League Division One on Friday.

It would take till three minutes before half-time for Cardiff to reach double figures, by which time Wolves had already approached their half-century of scoring, on the way to a thumping 94-40 victory.

American forward Earl Burgess jumped highest to win the opening tip-off and soon bustled to the evening’s first points.

Daijaun Antonio turned down a layup beneath the basket to instead throw the ball out for Fin Rennie to drop a three-pointer.

Rennie accepted a double of assists from Burgess and Antonio floated in a triple for a 12-0 score-line after just five minutes and Archers desperately calling for timeout.

The halt in play did little to disturb Worcester’s momentum as they swept into the second quarter already 20-6 ahead.

Luan Ferreira joined the action with a neat finger-roll and then enjoyed seeing his older brother Humberto sink consecutive threes.

Isaiah Dapaah rattled home a quick five points and Burgess twirled around flailing defenders to aid an overwhelming 47-17 interval lead.

The one-way traffic continued after the break with the visitors only worsening their own cause when voicing their frustration to the referees and receiving a trio of technical fouls in reply.

With the hosts entering the final period 73-26 to the good, Burgess perpetuated his control of both ends of the court and Harry Godwin became the latest player to bring a bunch of points with him off the bench.

Rennie and Burgess led the scoring with 16 points apiece, with the latter completing a double-double performance by also pulling down 11 rebounds.

“Today was about keeping players focused,” said Coach Dean Blake. “We will have to have high energy, high intensity and keep a high level of focus if we want to be one of the top teams in this league.”

Next Saturday 18 October, (3.45pm), Wolves will face the challenge of a return trip to Birmingham City University just a couple of weeks after their Midlands rivals bounced them out of the National Cup.

“The preparation for Birmingham starts now,” added Blake. “The level of focus we currently have isn’t good enough yet – we will really need to step it up for next week.”

The next action at the University of Worcester Arena will take place on Friday 24 October with the visit of Myerscough Basketball Academy. Grab your tickets for the game here.
