Worcester Wolves 48-69 Loughborough Riders
Sunday 19th February
By Ben Spittle
The Wolves’ strong home form in 2023 came to an end today after being unlucky throughout the 4th quarter against the Riders which as a result led to unfortunate defeat and a big dent in playoff hopes for the Wolves.
In the first quarter the Wolves were the team to open the scoring after two minutes as both teams had strong defensive plays which meant that the score stayed low throughout the first 10 minutes. Both teams main source of points came through free throws and because of this the quarter ended with the Riders in a lead by a single point (12-13).
The second quarter was very similar to the first quarter with neither team being able to bypass each other’s defences. As the quarter went one the game did start to open up as the half stage of the game approached. The quarter ended with the Riders extending their lead to 7 points (21-28).
The Wolves started off strong managing to score 6 points within the first two minutes of the quarter. With this change of approach, the game started to become more end to end. However, this change of style suited the Riders a lot more and as a result it meant the Wolves had a mountain to climb in the final quarter as the Riders led 29-44.
The final 10 minutes really allowed the Riders to play their own style due to the Wolves having to go a lot more attacking to try and get back into the game. However, it wasn’t enough as the Riders made the most of their counter attacks which allowed them to open up their lead to over 20 points as they won the game 48-69.
Nuri Seyedagha-Calderon led the Wolves scorers 15 points followed by Charlotte Finn with 8 points and Shona Williams with 7.
The Wolves return to action this Sunday when they welcome Thames Valley Cavaliers to the University of Worcester Arena.
