Worcester Wolves first game of the season ended in defeat to Loughborough Lightning 67-33. Despite evident improvements from last season by Worcester, Loughborough remains the victorious team.
Lightning got off to a great start with Lucy Robinson winning the tip off allowing Loughborough to lead 6-0 in the early part of the first quarter. Wolves Captain, Sarah Hope earned Worcester their first two points of the season. Worcester struggled to get through Loughborough’s defences and Lightning continued to dominate the first quarter and lead by 8. (16-8)
The second quarter saw the Lightning lead by 12 early on but the Wolves began to pick up the pace looking to utilise missed opportunities from Loughborough. Shots from Sarah Hope, Ellan Fraser, and Amber Loughlin earned Worcester another 9 points in the quarter. Worcester was unable however, to contain the Lightnings as they continued to maintain a 10-point lead with the second quarter ending 27-17
During the Second half Loughborough continued to put pressure on the Wolves with major contributions from captain, Robyn Love and Lucy Robinson. Loughborough capitalised on their fast play and ability charge down the other end of the court allowing them to lead by 24 at the end of the quarter. The Wolves remained competitive but were only able to add 6 points to Worcester’s total, the third quarter ending 47-23
Wolves would need a tremendous effort to bring the game back to their side, but unfortunately Loughborough remained efficient going into the last quarter. The game ended with Loughborough winning 67-33.
Great performances from both captains Sarah Hope and Robyn Love, who were the highest’s scorers for their team. With Love picking up 21 points and Hope 17.
