WPL Head Coach Simon Fisher Previews The 2023 Season
By George Chapman
Worcester Wolves head coach Simon Fisher previews the upcoming BWB Women’s Premier League campaign as their season tips off on January 29th.
Having finished last season third in the playoffs overcoming Cardiff Met Archers, the Wolves will be looking to build on last year’s campaign.
Reviewing last season Simon Fisher said; “We went to the playoffs, we couldn’t get Loughborough in the first game, they were too strong for us and deservedly won the title. They were the best team last year in terms of performance, but we went to the third and fourth game, we won against Cardiff and came third I think that’s a fair summation of our journey over all we’re heading in the right direction.”
New additions Niamh Horan, Jenni Toase, Elana Brand and Lillie Hickman will be joining the Wolves.
On the new additions to his squad, coach Fisher said; “This year we’ve had a couple of new additions, Niamh Horan has come in from Loughborough so she’ll give us a bit more depth in the midpoint position, we’ve had Jenni Toase come down from Tees Valley and she’ll add more depth in the low point positions, giving us some different rotations and we’ve also have Elana Brand whose a really exiting 17 year old, she’s here to develop and also Lillie Hickman as well. Both of those are young players that in two to three years’ time will really be taking the game by the scruff of the neck.”
Fisher continued: “What do we look like this year?, I think we’ve improved, I think we’ve moved on a step I think the players have got more confidence, players have got more understanding of what we are trying to do. Other teams would’ve moved on I think Loughborough and London are pushing at the top, ourselves and Cardiff will be trying to take one off them.”
On pre-season Fisher said: “It’s been quite a long pre-season because National Leagues have started, and the Women’s League started. The World championships were due to be in November then got cancelled so I think come the end of January when the ball goes up, I think there’s been quite a long lead into that I think its going to be quite a sprint, but we are moving in the right direction I’m looking forward to taking the girls into next season.”
