Loughborough Lightning 67–37 Worcester Wolves

Worcester Wolves were heavily struck by Loughborough Lightning in the penultimate game of the season. The league leaders were relatively unscathed in a brilliant performance to please the home crowd at the Loughborough University.

Loughborough captain, Robyn Love opened the scoring and set them on their way; scoring 6 points in the first quarter to help build an early lead. Six turnovers and seven missed shots didn’t help the Wolves halt the home sides early momentum. The quarter ended 18-10 in Loughborough’s favour.

The start of the second quarter saw the two sides trading baskets, with more missed shots denying Worcester a chance of narrowing the deficit. However, a good scoring performance from Loughborough’s bench saw them stretch their advantage to 18 by the end of the half.

The score was Loughborough Lightning 38 – 20 Worcester Wolves at the half time break.

Pace slowed down at the start of the second half which helped Worcester win the quarter. A stretch of four minutes without a basket from either side was eventually broken by Love, who shot an astonishing 83% from 2-point range. The slow scoring quarter saw Worcester take two points out of the host’s lead.

Worcester needed an almighty performance to haul their way back into contention, but Loughborough had other ideas. Four consecutive baskets with no reply set them on their way to pick up yet another victory. Loughborough’s stellar defence limited the Wolves to just six points in this quarter. The game finished with the Lightning holding their biggest lead of the game of 30 points.

Brilliant performances from Loughborough’s Robyn Love and Lucy Robinson saw them pick up 22 and 23 points respectively. Worcester’s Jade Loughlin picked up 10 points, the only visiting player to get out of single figures. Sarah Hope cleaned up the glass with 15 rebounds.

The two sides meet at the same time and same place next week where the Wolves will be hoping to end the season on a high.
