East London Phoenix 53 – 42 Worcester Wolves

Worcester Wolves made the long trip to the capital to take on East London Phoenix is the BWB Women’s Premier League, still in search of their first win of the competition.

Both teams started nervously and after 11 missed shots, the scoring was finally opened by Freya Levy who was presented with a clear run to the basket. A foul on Jade Loughlin gave Worcester a trip to the line, with Loughlin making both free throws to open Worcester’s scoring.

Entering the second quarter tied at 6-6, East London Phoenix immediately began to open a gap with Amy Conroy converting a lay-up and the free throw following a shooting foul by Loughlin.

Conroy proved too much to handle for the Wolves in the second quarter, where she picked up 16 out of her 20 points before the half. This gave the London side a 13-point lead heading into halftime.

The Phoenix’s Beth Wheeler opened the third quarter scoring with the only 3 pointer of the game. From there, the two sides were trading baskets, preventing Worcester making any sort of second half comeback.

The fourth quarter of the game was the only quarter the Wolves won, however the 3-point winning margin was not enough to close the gap that East London Phoenix creating in the second quarter.

Two players scored double points for the Wolves, Sarah Hope (18) and Jade Loughlin (12). But Amy Conroy away performance of 20 points, 14 rebounds and just 2 assists shy of a triple-double stole the show Saturday afternoon.

Worcester Wolves will have chance for redemption when they play East London Phoenix again this Saturday at the University of Worcester Arena, tip off 1pm. Tickets are available on the Worcester Wolves website and from the Arena.
