Worcester Wolves 63-57 Bristol Flyers.
Saturday 2nd October 2021
Worcester Wolves pick up a win on the first day of the WNBL Division 1 season against the Bristol Flyers.
A very impressive showing from the home side, seeing the Wolves see out a great win 63-56.
The first half showed a dominating display from Coach Ryan Emery’s side, forcing many turnovers and shot clock violations to the ovation of the fans in attendance.
The Wolves were not just on fire defensively, their attack was just as deadly in the first half with Shanice Turner and Estella Maloney firing from three-point land on many occasions and the Wolves managing to end the first quarter with a deadeye three-point buzzer-beater.
Worcester Wolves looked to have the Bristol Flyers where they wanted them at halftime, leading them 36-26.
This ten-point lead could not be shaken by Bristol Flyers as they were still behind by double figures going into the fourth quarter, as the inside scoring of Shona Williams could not be stopped.
The final quarter saw a huge hill for the Flyers to climb, and they still had a lot of fight in them forcing a lot of turnovers with a full-court press that mounted the pressure on Coach Emery’s side for the start of the final quarter.
With the momentum of Bristol Flyers mounting, Worcester Wolves had to combat their defensive issues with better defense.
Nuri Seyedagha-Calderon was a defensive pest for the entire game, not letting any points get past her and locking down the Flyers’ offense.
This tenacious defending was combined nicely with a fantastic three-point shooting display from Chandre Nunez.
The big story of the game was that Bristol was chasing the game the whole way, Worcester Wolves did not slow down with their roster depth and tactical substitutions.
Coach Ryan Emery and his players can all be extremely happy with their performance to kickstart their momentum going into the WNBL Division 1 season.
The top performers being Chandre Nunez with 18 points, Shanice Turner with 13 points, and both Shona Williams and Charlotte Finn contributing 10 points to get the Wolves over the line.
Worcester Wolves’ next game in the WNBL Division 1 will be against Loughborough Riders away from home, their next game at the University of Worcester Arena will be Saturday 23rd October against Anglia Ruskin University.
