Ahead of the clubs 20th Anniversary Season, the Worcester Wolves have announced their first signing for the new British Basketball League campaign with the return of captain Maartin Bouwknecht.

The former Netherlands International has re-signed with the franchise following a highly successful first season with the Wolves in the BBL.

Bouwknecht captained the side to the BBL Cup Final in January 2020, lifting the prestigious silverware for the first time in the club’s history and also the Wolves competing at the top of the Championship table.

Last season, the 6ft 2 guard averaged 7.07 points, 3.14 assists, 2.07 rebounds and 1.07 steals per game and was recognised for his hard defending, high tempo play and ability to create opportunities and open looks at the scoring end of the floor.

Bouwknecht was a professional on and off the court and Worcester Wolves Head Coach Matt Newby is excited to work with his captain once again.

“I am really pleased with retaining Maarten, his versatility on the floor and his high order basketball IQ make him a valuable asset. He has an excellent recognition in game play of the appropriate tempo or gear we need to be and his decision making at critical times proved invaluable.”

There is a lot that goes unseen and the impact he has, does not always register statistically, whether that be taking a charge, running the offence or communicating what he sees on the floor.  That said, he is an excellent shooter and a strong creator and I will be expecting even higher returns this season, I am excited he is returning to the University of Worcester Arena and I feel that by having such a naturally competitive player every day in practice will bring out the best in his teammates.

I am sure this first addition to our perimeter will be one the Wolf Pack appreciates and I look forward to preseason.”

Bouwknecht cannot wait to return to Worcester and start preparing for the new BBL season.

“I am really thrilled to be back, I had an amazing year last year.

The Wolf Pack always had our back last year, and I hope this year is going to be no different if COVID-19 allows us.

I cannot wait to be back on the court again and finish what we started last year

I’m very thankful for getting another opportunity to play here”
