Wolves Players Challenged to Boost Performances and Raise Charity Funds

A Worcester charity is set to benefit from a unique incentive offered to the Worcester Wolves by a local business.

With the Wolves having being knocked out of the BBL Trophy last weekend, the club’s attentions are now firmly on finishing their league campaign strongly.

Paul James’ side currently sit in a healthy second place, behind the Newcastle Eagles, but have seen their performances dip in recent weeks. One of the reasons for this, James believes, is the fact that in four of their last five fixtures, Wolves have been second best to their opponents in terms of rebounds.

Local businessman and Wolves supporter Steve Edwards has also recognised the problem, and has come up with an innovative approach to attempt to get this crucial facet of Wolves’ game working effectively again.

Over Wolves’ next five games, for every rebound that the team make, Mr Edwards’ company, Spirit Executive, will donate £1 to the Riverbank Children’s Ward at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The ward is the nominated charity of the year for the University of Worcester – who own the Worcester Wolves – and it is hoped that other businesses will follow Spirit Executive’s lead in supporting the charity and the Wolves for the remainder of the season.

Mr Edwards explains: “We have not played well in several games when we have lost the rebounding battle, so this is a creative way for the team and the fans to focus on a key area whilst also raising some money for a really worthy cause.

“With the play-offs, we could potentially have a maximum of 19 games remaining this season; if we make 40 rebounds per game, we could be looking at nearly £1,000 for the charity.”

Paul James, who has seen his side win their last four league fixtures by a margin of three points or less, adds: “We have a very committed group of players who are always looking to improve in each game. If, by achieving even more rebounds, they will be helping others as well, it can only be a good thing.”

Worcester-based Spirit Executive is a search and recruitment firm specialising in the transportation, buildings and infrastructure, environmental, power and energy and manufacturing sectors.
