December 2014 Wolves Wary Ahead of Crucial Double-Header

Worcester Wolves face another British Basketball League (BBL) double-header this weekend as they host the Manchester Giants on Friday, before travelling north to face the Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday.

Friday’s game carries added importance, with Wolves needing a win to claim the first head-to-head of the season against the Giants, who they have already faced twice during this campaign.

“The head to head’s on the line here; they beat us away and we beat them at home,” Wolves Head Coach Paul James says.

“It’s very important that we try to win as many head to heads as we possibly can; I think if you’re going to win the league, that’s what you have to do. So it’s quite a crucial game for us in that respect,” he adds.

After the Giants inflicted Wolves’ first league defeat of the campaign back in October, James is wary of the threat that the visitors will pose on Friday.

“They’re going to be a tough team; David Watts, Callum Jones and Stefan Gill are all very, very good players. If we allow them to, they can really hurt us. We’ve played them twice and we know what they’re about, and hopefully we can take away those strengths from them.”

Wolves then make the trip to the Northgate Arena on Sunday to face the in-form Cheshire Phoenix, who are currently unbeaten in six games in the BBL, with James anticipating another difficult game for his side.

“Cheshire are probably one of the form teams along with Newcastle,” he explains. “I think they’ve won six games in a row; albeit with teams that are mid-table or below, but they’re going to be playing with a lot of confidence.

“They’re a different team to the one that we played in October. It’s a brand new team so we don’t know a great deal about them.

“But what we do know is what we’re capable of. If we go out there, play the defence like we’re supposed to, run our sets and are clinical, we’re going to give ourselves a good chance of winning that game.”

Wolves have lost only twice in the league this season, and a win on Friday would see them claim top-spot in the BBL.
