This Friday (31st) will see the Worcester Wolves host the Bristol Flyers in their first competitive meeting as the two sides battle it out for a place in the British Basketball League (BBL) Cup Semi Final.

But, despite it being the first time that the Flyers will have played at the University of Worcester Arena, it will be somewhat of a homecoming for three former Worcester students. Sports graduate Simon Stewart, Business graduate Roy Owen and Sports Psychology graduate Jordan Ranklin all played an integral part of the ongoing success within the British University and Colleges Championships (BUCS), which Worcester have now secured eight times in the past ten years.

Not only did they represent the Wolves teams at both English Basketball League and British Basketball League level, but the players also featured in the much heralded ‘Learning Through Sport’ initiative delivered by the University in partnership with the Wolves. Students involved in the programme have the opportunity to inspire youngsters in school in sport through educational activities.

Managing Director of the Wolves, and Head of the Institute of Sport at the University of Worcester, Mick Donovan said that the players would be warmly welcomed back on Friday. “We will be thrilled to welcome all three players back to the University and are delighted that they are involved in the dynamic and progressive initiative at Bristol.

“They all opted for the University of Worcester originally with a clear and determined focus to develop as players and students and they certainly achieved many of their goals whilst also making a fantastic contribution to our programme. They are all exciting players in different ways but great people to have within a sport and educational programme. We always offer a warm reception to our returning graduates at our University and Friday will be no exception,” he added.

Wolves secured a 65-71 win when the sides met in pre-season, but the winner of the upcoming BBL Cup game will secure a place in the semi -finals and be within touching distance of the Final at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham.
