Friday 18 April 2014 – Worcester Wolves vs Glasgow Rocks
‘More of the same’ is the message from Worcester Wolves coach Paul James as his team aim to close the regular season on a winning note and enter the Play-offs in good form.
It’s been a season of progression for Wolves, who, as well as challenging for the BBL Championship, secured their first piece of silverware, the BBL Trophy.
Wolves host the team they beat to win the Trophy, Glasgow Rocks, on Friday at the University of Worcester Arena, (tip off 7.30pm), and James wants his side to continue in the same vein to set them up for success in the post-season.
“I think that we are pretty much where I would like us to be,” said James.
“We’ve played good basketball throughout the season and when we haven’t we have found ways to win. I just want the team to continue playing with the determination and confidence that we have shown this season.”
Undoubtedly the highlight of Wolves’ season so far, the Trophy Final was a huge disappointment for the Rocks, particularly as they were playing at home.
But James doesn’t feel that will affect Friday’s game, adding: “I think them needing to secure a place in the end of season Play-offs is all the motivation Glasgow will need.
“They pushed us all the way in the Trophy Final so I’m sure that they will believe that if they can do certain things better it will give them a good chance.
“For us it’s our last home game of the regular season and so we will be desperate to end the season on a winning note.”
Meanwhile Rocks coach Sterling Davis remarked: “I would like to think this [the BBL Trophy Final] will be motivation for our guys. We knew we let one slip that was within grasp in our biggest game of this season so hopefully we can go in with a revenge mindset to push through.”
Wolves forward Jamal Williams, who shrugged off an ankle injury from last week to play a few minutes in Wednesday’s trip to Sheffield, commented: “I believe that [the BBL Trophy Final] could serve as a strong motivator for them but we can’t focus on anything like that, we just need to focus on all the things that we can control.
“Sterling is a great coach and he has them playing with the same intensity night-in and night-out so we expect nothing but Glasgow’s best on Friday night.”
Anyone coming along to Good Friday’s match at the University of Worcester Arena will also be entitled to free admission to watch Women’s International Wheelchair Basketball with Great Britain taking on Japan, (tip off 4.30pm). Earlier in the day the University Arena will host Great Britain against Germany at 9am, followed by Japan versus Germany at 1pm.
On Saturday a further three basketball internationals will take place, with Germany playing Japan at 9.30am and Japan taking on Great Britain at 2.30pm (both games free for spectators), before Great Britain face Germany in the showcase game at 7pm – tickets for that fixture are available from tickets@britishwheelchairbasketball.co.uk.
