Love is in the air in Worcester

By the time Valentine’s Day rolls around this Friday it will be nearly three weeks since the Worcester Wolves last played in the city, three lonely weeks during which the love affair between the club and their fans has had to be put on hold.
Wolves are currently enjoying their best ever season, sitting proudly at the top of the British Basketball League, and are also delighted that all the on-court success is attracting supporters in bigger numbers than ever before. It was standing-room only at the University of Worcester Arena as the Wolves triumphed over reigning champions the Leicester Riders in the season-opener in September, and each game since has been watched by big crowds.
Friday will see the visit of Glasgow Rocks and there are already signs that the volume of love-starved fans eager for another fix of basketball action will mean another near-capacity attendance. Wolves’ President Mick Donovan is keen to ensure that no-one has to miss out on the latest chance to be a part of the evening:
“The pre-game ticket sales for Friday are already in excess of any of our fixtures since opening night. The team are performing brilliantly at the moment, standing clear at the top of the table. I would have expected that to lead to some healthy attendances. But it is about more than just what is happening in terms of results. We have had a lot of people coming along who have never seen a game of basketball before, never mind all the other things that surround it such as the light show, the music and the cheerleaders. I get plenty of e-mails from people saying that they’ve had such a good time and will bringing others back with them for another visit.”
“We will do everything to make sure that anyone who wants to pay on the door at the Glasgow match can get in, but to ensure the best choice of seat and to bypass the queues on the door, I would recommend that supporters visit our website to buy tickets in advance,” added Donovan.
Head coach Paul James is also appreciative of the support his players are receiving:
“The team is flying at the moment, and a big part of what is happening are the fans. We’ve certainly had some exciting games at the arena, and last time out against Cheshire was amongst one of the best. We had to come back from a deficit to take the match into overtime, before we eventually took the win. In the last few minutes the noise from the crowd played a big part in spurring us on when we might otherwise have accepted a defeat.
“I’m proud of what the team is now achieving and I’m proud to have the support of the people of Worcester.”
Tickets for the visit of Glasgow Rocks at St Johns Sports Centre at the University of Worcester on Friday 14 February (tip off 7.30pm) can be purchased in advance by visiting the Wolves website www.worcesterwolves.org
