Hereford Community Basketball Club to launch January 19th

The Worcester Wolves Basketball Club in partnership with the University of Worcester supported by BrightStripe – Cultural Health C.I.C, Hereford, the Herefordshire & Worcestershire County Sport Partnership, and England Basketball are excited to announce the launch of a new community basketball club, based at Whitecross Hereford: High School & Specialist Sports College.

While there exists a vibrant Hereford Schools basketball programme, the club will seek to encourage basketball engagement beyond the school gates in Hereford by providing community members with weekly, coached basketball sessions that are focused on enjoyment and inclusion, whilst encouraging skill and knowledge development.

Whether youngsters have played some basketball in the past or will be trying the sport for the first time, the community club is open to all ages and abilities from mini dunkers (5 years of age) upwards.
The aim of the University of Worcester and Worcester Wolves programme is to establish and support a self-sustaining club with a Hereford identity run by local committed, enthusiastic members of the community. They are actively seeking volunteers and parents with an interest in basketball, or experience within a club environment, to help run and embed the club within the local community.
To mark the foundation of the club there will be a competition for the local community to name the club and design its logo. The winning name and logo should capture the essence of Hereford and represent those who will be playing under the club’s banner.

Ultimately, the project focus is to provide added playing opportunities for participants of all levels across Herefordshire and establish a clear development route for players, including exit routes for recreational and elite players. Director of Basketball for the Worcester Wolves, Paul James, said ‘We are really excited about working with the youngsters in the Hereford region and engaging with the community in a range of related activities’. The Wolves, who are currently at the top of the British basketball league, will be also sending some of their main players from the BBL team to meet some of the youngsters during some of the sessions.
The community club will run on Sunday mornings, from 11am to 1pm at Whitecross Hereford: High School & Specialist Sports College. The club will start on Sunday 19th January and will cost just £3 per session.
