Rising Star returning to Worcester

One of last year’s surprise packages is returning to Worcester Wolves for the forthcoming season.

Kalil Irving came to the city last summer to study marketing at the University of Worcester and immediately contacted Wolves’ Director of Basketball Paul James, seeking a place in his squad.

James soon liked what he saw from the 21 year old forward and rewarded him with a spot on his roster. By only his third competitive game for the Wolves, versus Mersey Tigers, Irving had already hit double-figure scoring. By October he had become a member of James’ starting five and hit a season-high 22 points in an outing against Cheshire.

Quickly becoming a fan favourite for his high-powered plays (he was named as Wolves’ Most Exciting Player for 2012-13), Irving’s swift rise to prominence continued with a call up to join the England squad, taking part in last weekend’s doubleheader of friendlies against Scotland.

Paul James spoke about the impact Irving has had in only his first year at the Wolves: “Kalil came over to us having played with Medway Crusaders at a level beneath the BBL. He immediately showed me that he can handle himself at a higher level. His ability and hard work has earned him minutes with the Wolves and the opportunity to represent his country.”

James is pleased that Irving has committed to continue his development in Worcester, adding: “If Kalil carries on with his dedication and hard work then he can have a great future in the game. We will support him in achieving his goals and I know he will want to show everyone just what he can produce.”
