Consolation for Warrior Owumi

After watching Worcester Wolves narrowly fail to progress to the final of this year’s BBL Trophy their coach Paul James was quick to point out how disappointed one of his charges, guard Alex Owumi, would be about the setback: “Alex will be desperately disappointed. He hates losing, he’s a warrior.”

After scoring 29 points and grabbing six rebounds in the 73-82 first-leg loss to Leicester Riders, Owumi was even more impressive the next day in Worcester’s 68-66 return-leg victory in Leicester. For the second night in a row Owumi played all 40 minutes and for the second night in a row he claimed an outstanding 29 personal points, and also doubled his rebounding output to a dozen.

Given such impressive statistics, it was no surprise to see Owumi receive the honour of being named in the starting five of the latest British Basketball League Team of the Week. James commented on the two performances that prompted Owumi’s recognition: “He went off in both games. He helped us get in front on aggregate in the second leg, and helped give us a chance to get to the final.”

“He’s tough and I just know Alex will now be even more determined for the rest of the season,” added James.

The first chance for the Wolves to rebound will be this Friday (tip off 7.30pm) when London Lions visit the University of Worcester. Wolves will then make a trip to Chester’s Northgate Arena on Sunday afternoon (tip off 5.30pm) to face the Cheshire Phoenix.
