Sunday 24 February 2013 Durham Wildcats 79-83 Worcester Wolves

Worcester Wolves made it a double-winning weekend when following up Friday’s victory over the Surrey Heat with a hard-fought 83-79 triumph at Durham Wildcats on Sunday. This latest win makes it six in a row for the Wolves during February, moves them up to fifth place in the British Basketball League, and leaves them brimming with confidence ahead of next weekend’s BBL Trophy semi-final showdown against top-of-the-table Leicester Riders. Wolves’ guard Alex Owumi hit successive baskets to move his side to a 9-6 advantage after four minutes of play, but then watched the Wildcats take the next nine points for what would be their largest lead of the contest. Power forward Stan Ocitti made a couple of free throws and then rose up to block a shot attempt by Wildcats’ Mike Baldarelli. Ocitti’s pass to Carlos Fernandez helped Wolves edge to a 19-17 first quarter advantage. (more…)

Friday 22 February 2013 Worcester Wolves 99-81 Surrey Heat

Worcester Wolves made it five wins in a row when they defeated Surrey Heat 99-81 at the University of Worcester on Friday. The Wolves’ current unbeaten run stretches back to the last time they met the Heat, a game that was lost after overtime. However on this occasion there was no question of a close contest as the home side raced to a 31-17 first quarter lead and kept their opponents at arm’s length throughout the evening. Ex-Worcester forward Sam Cricelli opened the night’s scoring with a close-range shot but this was to be the only time that the Heat were in front. Lithuanian centre Arturas Masiulis got off to his usual fast start with four points and blocked a shot attempt from his opposite number Frank Holmes. Three successive long-distance baskets from the hosts took the score from 15-12 to 24-15, prompting a Surrey timeout after seven minutes had elapsed.. (more…)

Saturday 16 February 2013 Worcester Wolves 98-91 London Lions

In stark contrast to the demolition of Mersey Tigers the night before, Worcester Wolves found themselves embroiled in a dogfight at the University of Worcester on Saturday. It took two periods of overtime before the Wolves were finally able to see off the challenge of a determined London Lions 98-91. The Wolves controlled matters for most of the forty minutes of regulation time, but allowed the Lions to cling to their shirt tails in the final moments and tie the game on a Perry Lawson lay-up as time expired. In the first period of extra play the Wolves again looked to have clinched the victory until the Lions once more took the last score, this time from their England International forward Orlan Jackman. It was only after double- overtime that the home side were able to pull clear as their visitors lost players due to foul trouble. (more…)

Friday 15 February 2013 – Worcester Wolves vs Mersey Tigers

Worcester Wolves play the first part of their weekend doubleheader this Friday evening when they face struggling Mersey Tigers at the University of Worcester (tip off 7.30pm).  Wolves sit in sixth spot in the BBL Championship with an 11-9 record while the Tigers remain winless after 22 games. Paul James' Wolves side have enjoyed comfortable wins in both of their games against the Tigers this season, winning 98-48 at home in mid-October and repeating the trick a fortnight later with an 86-54 road win. Despite Tigers' poor season, Wolves' coach James won't be taking the Mersey team lightly: "We don't believe we are that good a team where we don't have to prepare for some teams. We are totally focused as a group and understand that we must try and be better today than we were yesterday.. (more…)
