Sunday 10 March 2013 Cheshire Phoenix 90-121 Worcester Wolves

Worcester Wolves completed a fine double of weekend victories when demolishing Cheshire Phoenix 121-90 in Chester on Sunday afternoon. A thoroughly professional display was enough to see the Wolves rise to joint-third place in the British Basketball League, ahead of a near-two week break before the team next sees action. Just as in Friday’s comfortable victory over the London Lions, stifling defence and efficient offence was the key factor in the success. Ex-Cheshire forward Kai Williams revelled in returning to his former home court, punching in 29 points, while Stan Ocitti posted a double-double of points and rebounds for the second game in a row. Sunday 10 March 2013 – Cheshire Phoenix vs Worcester Wolves

Two sides who had the bitter taste of BBL Trophy semi-final defeat last week meet on Sunday afternoon as Cheshire Phoenix host Worcester Wolves at Northgate Arena (tip off 5.30pm), with BBL Championship points at stake. Phoenix suffered a heavy second-leg loss at One Health Sharks Sheffield while Wolves lost a thriller over two legs against Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders. Both sides will now turn their attentions to finishing the regular season strongly. Cheshire are one place out of the play-offs in joint ninth with a 9-18 record, while the Wolves are still challenging for a top four finish and head into a weekend that sees them host London Lions on Friday evening in joint-fifth with 15 wins from 24 games. Friday 08 March 2013 Worcester Wolves 94-76 London Lions

Worcester Wolves bounced back in style from last week’s BBL Trophy disappointment when comfortably seeing off the challenge of London Lions on Friday. The tip-off of the match was delayed due to the Lions arriving late at the University of Worcester after being caught up in heavy motorway traffic and the Wolves seemed determined to punish their visitors for their tardiness. A double-digit lead was established after only a few minutes of play and was easily maintained throughout the evening, on the way to a 94-76 victory. London’s captain Michael Martin fumbled his side’s opening possession, allowing his Wolves’ counterpart Carlos Fernandez to eagerly pounce and score. Wolves’ centre Arturas Masiulis helped himself to the next five points and Fernandez then floated up a long pass for Stan Ocitti to slam though the basket. After four minutes Lions’ coach Vince Macauley called for a time out with his team trailing 15-9. (more…)

Friday 08 March 2013 – Worcester Wolves vs London Lions

The battle for BBL Championship play-off seedings continues on Friday evening at the University of Worcester (tip off 7.30pm), as the home-town Wolves host London Lions. The Wolves head into a weekend where they also visit Cheshire Phoenix on Sunday in joint-fifth spot with a 15-9 record and look a safe bet for a place in the post-season, but will still be aiming to move into the top four for a more favourable draw. Lions have now made seventh place their own - at least for a couple of weeks - with a 12-16 record but will know that they have played more games than the rest of the teams and that every victory counts. Consolation for Warrior Owumi

After watching Worcester Wolves narrowly fail to progress to the final of this year’s BBL Trophy their coach Paul James was quick to point out how disappointed one of his charges, guard Alex Owumi, would be about the setback: “Alex will be desperately disappointed. He hates losing, he’s a warrior.” After scoring 29 points and grabbing six rebounds in the 73-82 first-leg loss to Leicester Riders, Owumi was even more impressive the next day in Worcester’s 68-66 return-leg victory in Leicester. For the second night in a row Owumi played all 40 minutes and for the second night in a row he claimed an outstanding 29 personal points, and also doubled his rebounding output to a dozen. (more…)
